Who we are
Engine.codes is a free, browser-based OBD-II scanner operated by a sole proprietor in the United Kingdom. Contact privacy @ engine.codes
What data we collect for basic diagnostic:
- VIN (hash only)
- Fault codes (DTCs) + time stamp to improve code coverage & analytics.
- Region (country/state) derived from IP for aggregate stats.
Nothing else is stored (no cookies, advertising IDs, location, other PII)
Data retention
- Raw IPs & server logs: 24 hours then deleted.
- Hashed VIN + DTC counts: 12 months for trend analysis.
- Feedback text: until resolved or 12 months, whichever is sooner.
Your rights
Under GDPR / CCPA you may request access, correction, or deletion of any data linked to your VIN hash. Write to privacy @ engine.codes with the hash shown in the app footer.
Cookies & analytics
No cookies are set by this site if you don't consent to data sharing with OEMs.
Accessibility statement
We aim for WCAG 2.1 AA. If you encounter a barrier, email access @ engine.codes – we respond within 5 business days.
Children
This service is not intended for users under 16 years of age. We do not knowingly collect or store any information from children under 16. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a minor has submitted data, please email privacy @ engine.codes and we will delete it immediately.

Who processes the data?
We use a small number of specialised processors:
- Cloud hosting & CDN (UK)
- Error- and access-log provider (EU)
- Email & support ticket service (EU)
All vendors are GDPR-compliant and bound by DPAs.
Open-source licences
Frontend code is MIT-licensed; third-party libraries retain their original licences.
